The project is part of a studio that proposes mass timber as a potential structural material for mid-rise towers in Los Angeles, California. Situated in the site of where Wurstküche is currently located, this project began by first “pixelating” the site to rationalize the irregular geometry, then extruding slender “tubes” of various heights from the pixelation in order to enforce the verticality of the building. Each “pixel” is extruded up and down to interact with the local context of the Arts District, and also to create spatial variations within the building without the traditional use of walls to divide programs. This project proposes a new type of office tower in response to the emerging office style of coworking spaces, in effect challenging the traditional “pancake slabs” office typology.
