Biomedical Center of Barcelona

August - December 2016 (La Salle University)
Barcelona, Spain

This project began with an urban analysis by using the abundance and strength of Wi-Fi signals as an abstract representation of physical urban life along Carrer de la Marina in Barcelona, Spain. Then, taking on a similar approach as the urban analysis, and given the site of the abandoned train tracks between the Barcelona Zoo and the Barceloneta district, the site’s physical urban life is abstracted and represented by utilizing virtual reviews as a measurement. Ten spots based on “popularity” on Google Maps, Yelp reviews, and Trip Advisor reviews were chosen as attractor points for the site, each given a score based on three different parameters in order to reach a higher level of accuracy rather than reading the site only with only one set of scores. The three separate scores were utilized to generate their individual field maps through Grasshopper, then combined to achieve an overall reading of the site as a field of flow and densities rather than with regular roads, streets, and buildings. These studies then formed the foundation of the master plan of a Biomedical Center on the existing train tracks.
